Winter

How do you like to spend your winter season?  There are many different events in the winter season.  You can also have fun during the winter.

Do you like to sled during the winter?  Sledding can be very fun but dangerous.  Yet, the best activity to do in the snow is go sledding!  Flying down the steep snowy hills, going over superb bumps, and crashing are some ways you can enjoy yourself while sledding.  Sledding can be dangerous in all sorts of ways if you were to think about it.  When your sledding you can zoom down hills, but don’t go to fast or to slow because it might not turn out pretty.  This might be the only activity that you can zoom down hill on your bottom.  Isn’t that just weird.  You can race or do it for fun!  Sledding is the best snow activity!!

Do you like to decorate your Christmas tree?  Decorating your tree will make it sparkle so bright it will blind you.  Smash!  That could be the end of an ornament.  That won’t happen if you put the heavier ones on the thicker branches.  When you are done putting the decorations on your tree you can really see how all the decorating effort has paid off.  You would probably tell that it turned into quite a beautiful tree.  It will make your tree shine so bright it will make it look like a sparkling diamond.  I think the real point is so that the presents kids get can be put under something that makes the children more excited.  The tree might not be the best but it will definitely work.  Christmas trees are the best decorations you can have for the holidays.

Have you ever seen the ball drop?  Seeing the ball drop is a memory you will never forget.  It has a great view from wherever you are.  When the ball drops it is the New Year.  It will drop at 11:59 pm and, at midnight we ring in the New Year.  The sparkly ball is a great way to start the New Year.  10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,1, Happy New Year!  Right before that ball drop’s you need to make sure to say goodbye to the Year you are in right now.  The sphere that drops will be something you never forget.  It’s a lifetime memory.  It makes excitement inside of you to start the New Year.  This ball drops so fast you will see it for three seconds and that’s it.  The ball is only in New York City, but it is a tradition for everyone.  Watching the ball drop is a great way to celebrate New Years Eve!

It’s clear that there are many things to do in the winter.  As you can see you can fly down hills, use many decorations for Christmas trees, and watch the ball drop while we ring in the New Year.

Giants’ Game
LET’S GO GIANTS” the crowd roared!  I was so excited because I had on field tickets to see the New York Giants versus the Washington Redskins at Met Life Stadium, their home field in New Jersey.  Having on field tickets meant I got to meet a lot of players before the game. It was an awesome start to what would be an exciting day!
Our seats were super close to the field; in fact, we were only ten yards from being on the field! My dad and I couldn’t wait for the game to start.  Fortunately, we didn’t have long to wait. As soon as the game began, the Giants got off to a great start with an eight yard run by David Wilson, giving them a 7-0  lead!   Unfortunately, the Redskins came back with a 15 yard touchdown by Robert Griffin III.  Soon after, they scored a second touchdown and a field goal. The Redskins had momentum, which is hard to keep, but they were up 17-7 at the half.
During halftime, my dad and I went to get something to eat in a huge room where everything was free. I enjoyed some chicken nuggets before we went outside to the field.  When we got outside, I bent down to feel the black, moist, rubber turf and as I touched it I hoped that one day I too would play in the NFL.
Trailing by ten after the half, it was clear that the Giants weren’t done yet. They quickly scored a pair of field goals and now the score was 13-17. A lot of turnovers later, with no scoring, the Giants scored another touchdown with five minutes to go, bringing the score to 20-17. “Dad, do you think they will hold onto their lead?”
“Maybe! It depends if they’re tired.”
They must have been tired because three minutes later, the Redskins scored and pulled ahead by four points. With two minutes to go, we had to score a touchdown in order to win. For the Giants it looked like all hope was lost, until Eli Manning threw a deep pass to Victor Cruz. Cruz caught the ball at the forty yard line in their territory and ran to the 40, 30, 20, 10, 5… touchdown!  My dad lifted me up, and the crowd came alive, chanting, “LET’S GO GIANTS! CH, CH, CH CH CH!!!!!” It got so loud I’m sure you could hear the roar for miles!
Now with 1:00 minute left, the Giants were up 27-24.  The Redskins had to score a field goal to tie the game.  Redskin Robert Griffin III snapped the ball and threw it down field; the receiver caught the ball, then fumbled, but the Redskins recovered it. Next, Giant Jason Pierre-Paul sacked Griffin with 30 seconds left and the Redskins needed 40 more yards. On the second down the Redskins threw an incomplete pass that stopped the clock with 25 seconds left. Griffin snapped the ball but he could not see anyone open, so he ran the ball down the field.  At last, it came down to the final play.  The snap was low and the Giants came with a blitz.   I was on the edge of my seat and I almost fell down from excitement! Then Giant Justin Tuck came from the blind side and sacked Griffin. The Giants got the ball, took a knee and the game was over. I couldn’t believe it! We had done it and the Giants had won! My dad and I were clapping with joy and excitement. What a surprising turnout!
After the game ended came my favorite part when the teams shook hands, showing good sportsmanship. Finally the teams headed to their locker rooms; I got to peek in to the Giants’ locker room and a player gave me his hat. I also got one glove from Justin Tuck and two gloves from Jason Pierre-Paul!  I was so excited; I couldn’t believe my luck!  On the drive home all I kept talking about was getting the gloves. I also got to watch more football on my dad’s iPad. I will never forget this phenomenal day!

(P.S. This is all is real!)

Winter

Did you know 90% of people pick winter as their favorite season?  I can see why.  From skiing down a mountain to sitting by the fire with your hot chocolate, whipped cream and marshmallows, winter is the way to go.  There are plenty of satisfying and exciting holidays in the winter such as Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
Black Friday is on the day after Thanksgiving.  It is on Friday, and is the beginning of the holiday shopping season.  Just about every store has a big blowout sale.  Cyber Monday is similar to Black Friday, except the sale is online and is on Monday.  Though the stores can be hectic and the internet could be slow, shopping is a wonderful way to start the winter season.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is a called the Festival of Lights.  It celebrates the miracle of the oil lamp.  The story tells of their only being enough oil to light the lamp for one day, but instead it lasted for eight days.  The Hanukkah holiday lasts for eight days.  Each evening, one candle is lit on the menorah.  One candle is lit for each night, plus the Shamash to light the others.  While the candles are being lit, prayers are sung; presents are given to children.  Hanukkah is a special time to gather with family, eat special food, play games and open presents!
Christmas is a day that celebrates the birth of baby Jesus.  He was called the Savior in the Christian faith.  Santa Claus visits your house on Christmas Eve.  He is a jolly old elf, who lives in the North Pole and delivers presents via a sleigh and eight flying reindeer to good little children.  He comes down your chimney and puts treats in your stockings, but only if you are GOOD.  If you are not good, you get coal.  Christmas is a wonderful time of year to exchange gifts and have fun with family and friends.
Another winter holiday is New Year’s Day.  New Year’s Day is a day that celebrates the beginning of the next year.  On New Year’s Eve, there is a shiny glass ball that drops at midnight in Time Square New York.  It is dropped with a countdown, and when it reaches the bottom, the New Year has arrived.  Everyone cheers, kisses and makes their New Year’s pledge.  Many families gather yet again for a special feast on New Year’s Day and celebrate with family.
Some popular food and beverages in the winter time are gingerbread, hot chocolate, candy canes, and Hanukkah gelt and latkes.  Gingerbread is a type of cookie that is hard.  Some families make gingerbread men and gingerbread houses.  The cookies are frosted and decorated with candy.   Another tasty treat that is particular to winter is hot chocolate.  Do you remember coming in from playing in the snow, to sip hot coco with marshmallows and whipped cream in front of a warm and cozy fire?  I sure do.  Hot chocolate is a warm yummy treat!  Candy canes are next on our list of favorite winter snacks.   The traditional red and white stripped minty candy shaped as a cane is what most people envision when they think of a candy cane.  However, candy canes can come in a variety of colors and flavors such as green, blue, purple, and some even black, bubble gum, raspberry, fruit punch and traditional mint.  These unique candy goodies are one my favorite winter treats.  Yet another winter treat is Hanukkah gelt.  It is a chocolate coin used as a prize in playing the dreidel game.  It is so yummy that it even melts in your mouth.  They are really good!  Finally, latkes are fried potato pancakes served during Hanukkah.  You might be thinking, YUCK or EWW, but these potato pancakes are truly exceptional with some homemade applesauce.  They warm your tummy as well as your heart.  All these winter food treats are tasty to enjoy on a cold winter day.
Gracefully skiing down a steep mountain or getting pelted with snowballs, winter activities are one of the best parts of the winter season.   Building a snowman is a fun way to spend some time outside in the winter snow.  Close your eyes and imagine, adding a carrot nose to your snowman. Then taking a step back and smiling, at your fantastic snowy creation.  These snow people make an amazing scarecrow and winter friend until they melt in the sun.  Another fun winter activity is snow ball fights.  Did you know that nine out of ten people think that snowball fights are the best thing about winter?  These soft balls of snow are perfect for ambushing a sibling or getting revenge on a friend.  But watch out, you might just become the next target.  Sledding is another great way to spend a winter day.  Feel the wind in your face as you enjoy a ride on your winter sled.  Watch out for the bumps, otherwise you might end up in a pile of snow.   Lastly, skiing is a popular winter activity enjoyed by winter lovers.  Skiing is when you put your boots into two long narrow runners. They act like sleighs for your feet, allowing you to glide on the snow.  Two ski poles help you to balance and give you a starting push when you need it.  Skiing is a pleasure, team, race and trick sport.  I truly recommend skiing as a fun winter activity.  Building a snowman, snowball fights, sledding and skiing make for a fun outdoors winter snow day.

Winter is my favorite season because it is a time for holidays, special yummy treats and fun winter activities.  Santa, menorahs, presents, hot chocolate, candy canes, snowballs and skiing are just some of the outstanding things about winter.  But what makes each of these winter things better is doing them with family and friends.  And for these reasons, winter is my favorite season.  I hope it will be yours too.

Cantering Bareback

One day on a chilly, crisp fall morning, my trainer, Mackenzie, and I went to ride her horse Stoile. He’s an eight year old 16.2 hand thoroughbred gelding. He has three white stockings and a watch eye that make him adorable. When we got to the stable, we found Stoile munching on his crisp and fresh hay. He knew it was time to work, so he walked over to greet us. As I went to unlock the gate to Stoile’s turn out pen, the chains felt cold against my hands. I hooked him up to the cross-ties and started to groom him; dust flew in the air.

A cold breeze made my hair stand on end. I put on my helmet, gloves and jacket. Finally, we started to the indoor riding ring. I gave Stoile’s reins to MacKenzie, and she led him to the mounting block. I knew we were going to have some fun! First, MacKenzie mounted, and then it was my turn.  Stoile stood still, waiting for us to be ready. Then it was time… we were going to canter bareback!

We asked Stoile to walk around for a little bit so he would be warmed up. The excitement shot through my body as if I had never cantered bareback before. Then, MacKenzie asked Stoile to canter. I held her tight because I had nothing to hold on to. As I cantered longer, I felt more relaxed, like I was riding on a cloud! We changed directions and cantered the other way before we asked Stoile to walk. Sweat was starting to drip off of him. As he cooled down, I took a moment to appreciate my surroundings. It was a beautiful fall day; all of the leaves danced to the ground around us. It was so peaceful that I wished it could always be like this.
MacKenzie got off so I could ride Stoile back to the stable. I walked him around the stable until he was cooled down, at which point we changed him back into his halter. After that, I led him out of the stable and into his turn out pen. I unclipped his halter and took it off his soft, shining face. He gave a little nudge to me before I headed out, and I closed and locked the gate behind me.
On my way back to the stable, I went over to visit the little goats. My favorite was a goat I called Polo goat because he looks like my horse PoloBear. (If he was a goat of course!) They are both red with a little orange, and black all over. I gave him a quick pat on his neck then walked on.

When I reached the stable inside, I found Mom and Mackenzie talking about shavings. They talked for five more minutes before walking outside. There we found Kimble, the person who takes care of the horses, and his bird. The bird looked as if he could be a rainbow! My mom put her hand down on the railing in front of the bird. All of a sudden Kimble shouted, “Move your hand!!” A second after that, the bird closed its mouth where my mom’s hand had been. My mom’s face was pale. She was lucky she moved her hand just in time!
Unfortunately, the time had come when this wonderful day was at an end. I had so much fun and I didn't want to leave! My mom almost had to drag me into the car! Once we started to drive home, I settled in watching a movie, thinking about how much fun I had just had in one day. I knew I would never forget it… ever.

My Broken Arm
It all started on a warm, fall afternoon. Crisp leaves fell from almost empty trees. It was a few weeks before my birthday. I couldn’t wait. So I had made a choice...
“Please can we climb the tree mom?” we begged excitedly. There was a long silence. “Oh sure, but please be careful guys!” I screamed happily and started running down to the small tree close to the driveway.  Arden was right behind me. I had longed to climb it for a long time, but my mom always told me I couldn’t. She didn’t want any broken bones.
I was finally ready to climb this tree for the first time. I started to climb up the branch and then when I got up, I held on tightly to another branch. Arden climbed up after me. I really couldn’t believe I had actually done it. “Jump off!” Arden said. “There’s no room for both of us.”
I was ready. I could do this, I told myself calmly. I plunged forward. The wind was on my face.
I landed with a hard thud on my arm. The most dreadful feeling pierced my body.  I screamed in pain. I cried because I knew something. Something very horrifying.
My mom ran over quickly. “I thought you were laughing.” she cried helping me up. “I think I broke my arm,” I replied, sadly clutching my left arm in pain, as we walked up the driveway.
Once we arrived at the house, I sat down on a blue, wooden chair and tried not to bump my arm. My sister and Delphia, my former au pair, ran in to get me a cold ice pack and a scarf to hold up my arm. We used the scarf as a makeshift sling until we got to the E.R.  I hugged my dad goodbye. Then, my mom and I walked to the car and got inside. My mom helped me with the seatbelt. I held my icepack close to my arm. It hurt so badly!
Soon, after we got off an exit, we turned a corner and reached the hospital. Our car pulled up in front of the big building. I released my seatbelt free, pulled the latch on the door, and then got out of the car slowly and very carefully. I stepped onto the hard, gray concrete and then crunched on a leaf. I stepped away and turned my head to the three story building in front of my view. The hospital was a big building lined with glass windows. The hospital had two glass entry doors. I walked over and pushed one open. I was in the lobby. There was a counter and a big waiting area lined with chairs. There was a coffee table lined with many magazines. In the corner was a woven basket with toys for young children’s entertainment. I sat down on a navy blue chair and waited for my mom to finish filling out a couple sheets for me on a clipboard, then I would be good to go. This was going to be a long, long night.
Soon enough they called “Addisen.”
There was a big lump in my throat. I thought there were about 1,000 butterflies zipping through my stomach. I was so scared and nervous! I walked to a room. A kind lady was standing near a door. She looked like she was in her late 20’s. I had to sit again and she gave me a blue and white sling. “How much pain are you in honey?” she asked me kindly. She was very pretty and young. She had blond hair pulled up into a ponytail behind her. “Uh, number four?” I said.
“You tell me.” She replied.
“Yeah, number four.” I answered.
She scribbled something on the clipboard. “You’re all set!” she said with a giant grin. “By the way, my name is Dana.” I thanked Dana and walked slowly to the room we were assigned. 226 was the number.
Room 226 was a small room with a small TV and a counter. There were navy blue chairs lined up against the wall and a rolling bed in the middle of the room. I lay on the   soft cushions soothing my mind and making me forget about my horrible pain. After a little while of waiting, a lady came in to ask me if I wanted a board game, movie, or a coloring book to use while I waited. I decided to watch a movie. I settled on Thumbelina. The movie started and I lay back on my cushy pillows. I had to wait for my x-ray. Soon enough it came.
My bed was wheeled into the x-ray room and my arm was scanned. I crossed my fingers pleading for luck. I told myself it was probably a bruise or some sprain. Nothing big. Right? After three pictures I was wheeled back to room 226 and I continued to watch more of Thumbelina. I watched the movie in awe for a while until a man and women came in with my results. I had broken my radius and my ulna in my left arm. Ugh! The lady had a needle to give medicine to my body so I would fall asleep while the doctors put my cast on. I wouldn’t feel a thing! “Don’t worry. My son had this done. It doesn’t hurt. I promise you!” she persuaded.
“Alright,” I mumbled.
“Tell me when you’re ready.”
“Ready.” I said.
“1..2..3..” Before I knew it, the needle was in my arm and I was fine. It did hurt but I wanted to show her I was a brave seven-year-old, so I said nothing.
I watched the movie a little more and when Thumbelina was over and the credits were playing, a crowd of doctors piled up in my room. I was so nervous. They made my mom leave. “Bye!” I called after her. It was right before I started to fall asleep that one doctor squeezed my arm where one of the bones was broken. I screamed inside. Everything was silent. I had fallen asleep so quickly. Wow!
I woke up. I saw two of everything. “Are you awake?” my mom asked.
“Yeah.” I replied with a smile. My cast was tan and covered my whole arm. There was a layer of fluff and then a hard layer for protection. It was so heavy. My arm had to be bent for a while. I didn’t like it at all. I thanked all the doctors and went out to my car. I was really tired and I had had a long day. I fell asleep in the car thinking of the day I had just had and the new thoughts poured into my brain like a waterfall pouring in the Amazon. What an experience. But it wasn’t over yet! I still had to wait for my cast to come off…
